The International Peace Garden at the U.S. and Canadian border is celebrating 75 years this weekend.

An event-filled day is planned for tomorrow.

For three quarters of a century, this garden has been a symbol of friendship between the United States and our neighbor to the north.

In 1932 over 50,000 people made their way to the International Peace Garden to celebrate its opening.

(Kathy McGhan, Intl. Peace Garden) "We're just hoping that with the traveling the way it is that more people can come and show up for that day because they...some of them camped for over three days just to get here. They shut down businesses. It was awesome."


One event that took place on opening day will be repeated Saturday. It's the tug of peace tug of warCanadians versus Americans.

(Kathy McGhan, Intl. Peace Garden) "The Americans have held the title for 75 years, not because they've won, just because they've never repeated the event."


Hot air balloon rides, a barbecue, and live entertainment are just a few of the things you can expect to take in at the anniversary celebration.

(Kathy McGhan, Intl. Peace Garden) "The Fantasy Fiddlers, they're reuniting again that night to put on the concert. We have a gala concert. Impulse is coming. We have some Native American groups. It's just something for everybody."


Staff and volunteers have been working tirelessly to get the grounds ready following the flood damage last month.

Peace Garden horticulturist Connie Lagerquist says whether or not the grounds are in pristine condition won't be a factor in measuring the fun at this birthday celebration.

(Connie Lagerquist, Horticulturist) "If we have some areas that we can't get in to plant, we've got plenty of other areas that are going to be in a lot of color."
