Fiddling the Day Away at International Music Camp

Head over to the International Peace Garden this weekend, and you can meet people of all ages, from all over, all doing the same thing. They're just fiddling around.

Tonight we introduce you to those participating in the fiddle workshops at the annual International Festival of the Arts.

(Paul Anastasio, Seattle) "What it really is is almost like a roller coaster track."

And for the musicians participating in Paul Anastasio's fiddle workshop, the International Peace Garden has become an amusement park. But at this park, those interested in riding the coaster must first know how it works.

(Paul) "If you just saw the drawing of the track, you'd see this beautiful shape. But if you look underneath, there's structure. And that's what I'm trying to teach the kids, is to understand the underlying structure."

Those checking-out the structure cover all ages.

(Jane Cory, Winnipeg) "I've learned some chords and some different kinds of notes that I can do. And I've learned a new song."

Jane's 11, and she has four years of fiddling under her belt already. The boy to her rightthat's 12-year-old Jadan. He's been playing for a half decade already.

(Jadan Sorenson, Fargo) "When you learn a new thing, you can think about all these new things you could do. And when you learn them, you can think of all new things from them. You can learn a lot from other people as you get to know the style they're playing and how you play, too."

And while these kids may already be skilled enough to take part in Paul's advanced class...

The instructorand this year's fetaured performersays they have years ahead ot seek out higher notes.

(Paul) "As my dad said, as the radius of your knowledge increases, so does the circumference of your ignorance."

But, then again, with this particular workshop accomodating people of all skill levels...

They are able to take a moment and realize just how much skill they must have in order to be riding this particular musical roller coaster.
