"If I die as a believer  and there really is not  a God,  so what....   If an unbeliever dies ,  and then it turns out he was wrong, that there is a God.... thats different."

No offense intended, but that is a cop-out.

Faith is faith, not "what-if"; "what-if" undermines the whole concept of faith.

I've no such illusions; there is a God - He's not a "maybe".

Very interesting. I've come late to this post, but, in reference to the OP's query, here goes:

I believe in the Maker of All Things, God. God was very vengeful (see Sodom and Gomorrah). Humankind, His creation, did not comply, so it was destroyed (Noah), then renewed, and a Covenant was made with humankind that such an act wouldn't occur again (Abraham). He continued to test his prophets (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob), but blessed them with abundance. And then there was Moses (through Joseph), who led God's people to the Promised Land (which would be Israel, where they settled, long before Mohammed's claim to the land circa 700-800 AD).

In time, humankind slacked off again, so to speak. On the verge of being destroyed, we were spared: God remembered His covenant with Abraham and devised a way to continue the existence of His children: Send an ambassador, if you will, to Earth to proclaim His message. To do so, he needed an exemplary person to bear a child; he found one in Mary, and she bore God's child, delivering Him to the world, naming Him Jesus.

Jesus was unheard of for several years after His miraculous conception/birth. Besides the slaughter Herod inflicted, His early years are mostly undocumented.
When Jesus neared his 30's, the local community became transformed. People with incurable diseases were cured by His touch. Many were fed from a seemingly inefficient amount of food. Some Jews became convinced that Jesus was the Savior prophesied by their religion; some even became disciples.
These events led to accusations of Jesus being a heretic, both from Jews, who weren't ready to believe that the Savior/Messiah had arrived, and from the Roman occupying Jerusalem at the time, who preferred to believe that Caesar (whomever was occupying the post at the time - they believed, sort of (it was a political issue),  that all Emperors were derived from Julius Caesar) was the divine interpretation of God.
Jesus chose to sacrifice Himself, to offer Himself up to God (a very angry God, remember) as a replacement for all of the sinners (see above). Jesus allowed Himself to be sacrificed to the crowd; a thief on the cross next to Him recognized His divinity, and the huge mistake humanity was making, and he was rewarded.

Jesus's friends, the disciples, were variously scattered, but one, St. Peter, went on to found the Catholic Church. Peter was also the first Pope of the Catholic Church.
Protestantism was founded on dissent toward the crusades (how'd Muslim occupation work out for you, Spain?) and a British king's desire for divorce (Anglicanism). Both are relevant beliefs, but I am convinced that the latter religions were founded on politics, not beliefs.

And that is why I am proudly a Catholic. Reply...

ND. My response was put more elegantly by yourself. My intentions were to say that though Shoppe's logic seems sound, it is not the reason one would be a believer.........and by "one", I mean myself.

I would not become a believer in Christ because it was a death insurance policy.

Most of the time yes which is why I stated that bankruptcy may be the only way out of this mess for the auto industry.

The company has to request the contracts be voided but  it is up to the bankruptcy judge or arbitration panel to grant that request.  In many cases it ends up voiding the contracts but the union retains certain rights such as the right to strike.

WU...I believe you may be "misunderstanding" the "message" of what sg said above. Her statement is simply a fact, as she knows it. If she dies today and it turns out there is no god, what has she lost? However, if she dies today and it turns out that the god she has put her faith in does live, what has she gained? Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but it sounds as though you are implying she believes simply to be "covered" in the event God lives? Faith in my God cannot be compared to an insurance policy. I have a relationship with my Father that I'm sure is difficult to understand for non-believers. The change He has made in my life is immeasurable. I could not do Him justice by trying to describe myself/my life prior to coming back into His flock compared to what my life is like today. I always tell non-believers to investigate the foundation of the Christian faith and make a decision afterwards...the foundation being Jesus. If you break down Christ's life and claims, you really only have 3 conclusions you can draw. Jesus was insane, a pathological liar, or the Son of God as He claimed to be. I happen to believe if one opens their heart and looks at the facts objectively, the truth is discovered and Jesus is found to be everything we Christians believe He is...and more. Just my take... Maybe someone here knows but by declaring bankruptcy, don't all union contracts become void?

I wonder if that is why I heard one of the talking heads of the UAW on the news saying the auto companies need some "assistance"?

"Forcing" is exactly the correct term for what they are doing.  If there is no other option for a foreign language.  They made it mandatory to have this class.  It isn't an elective.  How is this NOT "forcing".

I am 100% in support of them teaching Hidatsa to those that want to learn it.

However, Not all students want to learn it.

And Not all parents want their kids learning this particular language.

We, as parents should have been contacted about this kind of change to the school ciriculum.

The trouble with the auto companies has more to do with retirees than current workers.  They are saddled with huge obligations for pensions and healthcare beneifits that they simply cannot afford and never should have agreed too.  The only way to get that fixed is bankruptcy.  It isn't about what they want to do or what they would like to do or what is the right thing to do.  It's about the only option they have given the situation they have gotten themselves into.    Reply...

I don't think one thin dime should go to the automakers.  In fact, I don't think one thin dime of tax payer money should go to any private business, union or not.  If your management can not make decisions to keep your company profitable, sucks to be working for that company.

By the way rick, very intelligent reply!

Shoppe.  I KNOW YOU BELIEVE DIFFERENTLY.....BUT IN THIS CASE......your rhetoric makes god to be like some kind of insurance policy.  Of which "security" is the key word.

Again, I know you are devout Christian.....but this line of thought does not become you. Trying to "market" god for by playing the upside versus the dreaded downside is a no-go.

The major problem, as we have discussed before, Shoppe, is not so much that you believe.....it is the implication(s) of that belief.  And that those faith-based opinions, when held singularly or (but more problematically when held) en masse start to affect those around you.

The "so what" of dying a believer (if there is no God) is that you lived your life believing a lie.

Its not the dying that is important in LIFE.....its the living.
