Stupid:

(CNSNews.com) - Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago where Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has been a member for two decades, slurred Italians in a piece published in the most recent issue of Trumpet Newsmagazine

“(Jesus’wink enemies had their opinion about Him,” Wright wrote in a eulogy of the late scholar Asa Hilliard in the November/December 2007 issue. “The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans.”

Wright continued, “From the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth (in a barn in a township that was under the Apartheid Roman government that said his daddy had to be in), up to and including the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ death on a cross, a Roman cross, public lynching Italian style. ..

“He refused to be defined by others and Dr. Asa Hilliard also refused to be defined by others. The government runs everything from the White House to the schoolhouse, from the Capitol to the Klan, white supremacy is clearly in charge, but Asa, like Jesus, refused to be defined by an oppressive government because Asa got his identity from an Omnipotent God.”

Remember all that controversy over Mel Gibson depicting Jews as Jesus-killers in The Passion of the Christ?  How do you think Italians feel about being cast in that same role?

And “garlic noses?” Why is that an acceptable term in the realm of serious political and religious discourse?  It’s no more appropriate than Imus’ “nappy headed ho’s” comment

Obama can kiss the Italian and Roman Catholic vote all the way g'bye.

Posted by JohnnyT on Mar 27 2008 4:01AM - Obama's chickens are coming home to roost.

Posted by MississaugaTrini on Mar 27 2008 3:41PM - The intended -and fairly common- idiom is "looked down their Gallic noses".

Either Trumpet Magazine or equally likely the original MSM "investigative reporter" misquoted RevWhite.

End of story.

Posted by claudia W on Mar 27 2008 5:42PM - Rev Wright is a very colorful character who tries to use current urban lingo to get his point of view across. He’s memorable.

The crucifixion was a lynching, Italian style since this was the preferred method of capital punishment for the Romans.

For any body to suggest that he is belittling modern day Italian Americans is totally ludicrous.

What he did say is factually correct: the Roman Empire was the super power of the time and they did look down their noses at the Galileans. In fact, we are told that Pontius Pilate saw his placement in this outpost as punishment.

I remember how Mel Gibson was made out to be a racist because he pointed out that some Jews, the Pharisees, were complicit in the crucifixion.

You are going to find a million Rev Wright quotations, how tiring. HE said them, NOT Obama!!

Posted by ron martinetti on Mar 27 2008 7:41PM - well he did say only "for the most part"

Posted by MoniQue on Mar 27 2008 8:47PM - Claudia,

One problem with your post: Italians did NOT exist at the time of the Romans. The ancient Romans were of Greek origin. The Italians as a people did not come on the scene until at least 500 years AFTER Jesus. And Pontius Pilate was not Italian.

Study and show yourself approved.

Posted by Rvars on Mar 28 2008 10:45PM - Ancient Romans were not of Greek origins only, but many ethnic groups, in fact from all regions of the empire. Originally a latin state but through expansion most others.
Italians were non-exitent until the late 1800`s, when Italy was formed.
The great majority of Italians were not even in the U.S until the 20th century,so they were not part of slavery or the slave trade!
However, Italians were lynched in the U.S many times! In Fact the largest lynching in U.S history were of Italians in New Orleans NOT balck Americans.
Rev Wright needs to learn history and Obama needs to learn who his mentors should be. Obama preaches unity while his menor preaches bigotry?! Something smells wrong to my garlic nose...sorry gallic nose.( French)
This fact alone should keep Italians and Catholic Americans from voting for Obama. I would not balme them one bit.

Posted by jonathan becker on Apr 1 2008 6:57PM - get a life, folks. wright's "garlic nose" comment was funny, even cute. even if the minister INTENDED to be insulting, he didn't quite pull it off. give him credit for making a (very) small joke. by the way, i'm italian on my mother's side and i still have a sense of humor. i can appreciate the comedic aspect of humor based on italian and italian american stereotypes....................
