Man accused of being phony lawyer to stay home

Eds: APNewsNow; Will be updated.

By DALE WETZEL Associated Press Writer Bismarck, N.D. (AP) A man accused of impersonating a lawyer has agreed to be confined in his Duluth, Minn., home until his trial next month.

Federal prosecutors had asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Miller Jr., to put Howard O. Kieffer in jail for violating conditions of his release on bond.

In September, Miller allow Kieffer to remain free until his trial if he did not hold himself out as a lawyer or sentencing consultant. Prosecutors say Kieffer has solicited clients in federal prison and offered help with legal matters.

Kieffer's attorney, Tim Purdon, denied that Kieffer violated his bond conditions, but Miller ruled Thursday that Kieffer went against his order.

Miller is barring Kieffer from having a computer and cell phone and from using the Internet.

Miller gave Kieffer a choice of going to jail or agreeing to the conditions and Kieffer chose home confinement. He will be electronically monitored.
