Conrad says he'll stay in Senate

Eds: APNewsNow.

Washington (AP) Sen. Kent Conrad says he won't take a job with President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

Conrad, one of Obama's early supporters, said Tuesday that he was approached by a colleague who is working closely with Obama's transition team. The colleague asked him if he would have any interest in heading the Office of Management and Budget, the White House's budget arm.

Conrad said he told the colleague that he has an obligation to serve North Dakota because he was just re-elected to his Senate seat two years ago. Conrad would not identify the colleague.

The North Dakota Democrat is chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
