Associated Press ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) John McCain says, as president, he'll end what he calls the "constant partisan rancor" gripping Washington. McCain made the pledge in accepting the Republican nomination at the party's convention last night. Today, he and running mate Sarah Palin will campaign together in Wisconsin and Michigan. HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) Obama campaign strategists are considering how to counter Republican vice presidential candidate sarah palin's attacks, without coming across as sexist. One approach is be to send out some high-profile female supporters, including Hillary CLinton. Governors Janet Napolitano of Arizona and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas are also scheduled to campaign for Obama in the coming weeks. WASHINGTON (AP) The Labor Department says the nation's unemployment rate has hit a five-year high. The report shows the jobless rate jumped to 6.1 percent last month. That's up from 5.7 percent in July. Employers cut 84,000 jobs. The figures are worse than economists were expecting. WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to make a gradual turn north and pick up speed as it heads toward the Carolina coast today. Tropical storm watches and warnings and a hurricane watch are in effect from Georgia north to Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Farther out in the Atlantic, forcasters says Hurricane Ike has weakened a bit, but remains a dangerous storm. KIEV, Ukraine (AP) Vice President Cheney is pledging U.S. support for Ukraine following last month's war between neighboring Russia and Georgia. After meeting with President Viktor Yushchenko (yoo-SHEN'-koh), Cheney said that Ukrainians should be able to live "without the threat of tyranny, economic blackmail and military invasion or intimidation."
