KXMCTV Minot More of us are opting to park the SUV in exchange for a two-wheeler! But, as Debbie Kuehn explains, even though they look as safe as can be it's important to follow some safety tips... These days...getting 100 miles to the gallon is the next best thing to hitting the lottery. That's why so many commuters are giving scooters some serious consideration. Retailers like Paradise Spas say... they're trendy without being spendy. Jason Nelson/ Paradise Spas-"Because I mean if you think about it, $4 a gallon gasoline... to have a toy that really pays for itself... no one's been able to do that so we're being fortunate to take advantage and do that." But just because they don't go as fast as a Harley, or they're not much bigger than a bicycle doesn't mean you can't get hurt riding on a scooter. That's why experts have this advice... JAson Olson/ Minot Police Dept.-"It's a lot like motorcycle safety. So just make sure that you're aware that if you're in traffic, you've got to drive defensively. Don't assume that the other driver sees you. The other thing is that a lot are easier to get in and out of traffic... weaving inbetween lanes, you're more manueverable. But you've got to remember that traffic may not see you." Jason N-"It's like anything. I mean you're on a public road, so there's precautionaries you need to take. You're amongst traffic so everything's the same as far as signaling, breaking, everything else." Helmets are required for anyone under 18, but they're a good idea for everyone. Jason N-"You can't control what the other traffic is doing. I mean you may be very safe yourself, but you can't control what that other car does." Jason O.-Preacticing in a parking lot or in an area that doesn't have a lot of traffic is also a good idea." Afterall, what good is it to save all of that money on gas, if you have to spend it in the hospital? Debbie Kuehn KX NEWs.
