KXMBTV Bismarck Tonight Reporter Sarah Gustin breaks down the details of one business that is truly "over our heads." (nats) Do you ever look at a crop sparyer making hundreds of turns in the air and think to yourself "those guys have got to be nuts?" (Curt Schorsch / Ag. Pilot) "I think I got a little bit quesy one time last year." Schorsch is one of those daring crop sprayers...spending his day landing, taking off, and dodging powerlines And if you ask Schrosch he wouldn't have it any other way (Curt Schorsch / Ag. Pilot) "I like it. I would do it for free, it is alot of fun, it is hard to describe, It's just the most fun you could have up there because it is very intense, you get an adreline rush from it." But airtime is only one piece of the puzzle While he is up flying...Lynn Westrom is taking calls, getting chemical and doing any and all ground work needed to be done Because their working window...isn't open very long (Lynn Westrom / Sprayers Inc.) "All these crops need to be sprayed at a certain time. Timing is everything. And the pressue is very great for about 2 months time. The most rewarding is seeing a patron produce a good crop without any damages to that crop." Westrom says they don't spray when temperatures go above 85 degrees, or if the wind is blowing more than about 12 miles per hour So when the conditions are right-it's go time (Sarah Gustin / KX News) "In about 3 to 4 minutes, they can load 250 gallons of water, mix the chemical and of course add 25 gallons of fuel." (Lynn Westrom / Sprayers Inc.) "We would come in at 10:30 at night do some book work, and get up at 4:30 in the morning and go again." (Curt Schorsch / Ag. Pilot) "As long as you get enough sleep during the night, it is not bad at all because I just enjoy the job so much." At the Mandan Airport, Reporting for KX News, I am Sarah Gustin. Westrom says it takes between 12 minutes to 1 hour to spray a load. Sprayers Incorporated starts spraying in June and they finish up in September.
