NRA official: Obama misleading voters on gun issue

Eds: APNewsNow. Will be led.

By MATT GOURAS Associated Press Writer HELENA, Mont. (AP) A top official with the National Rifle Association says Barack Obama is trying to mislead voters in places like Montana about his past support of gun control.

The organization is also critical of Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, who says there is little difference between Obama and Republican John McCain on gun issues. The governor recently said people who vote solely on the gun issue may have to look to Libertarian Bob Barr.

Schweitzer also said Obama, a fellow Democrat, is not going to take anyone's guns.

But NRA chief lobbyist Chris Cox says Obama has a 'pathetic' track record on gun issues.

The Obama campaign has been stressing to Western voters that his support of "sensible" gun control won't get in the way of their traditions.
