Garlic Harvest ThwartedAug 4 2008 7:44PM
KXMCTV Minot Debbie Kuehn talked today with one local producer who's been uprooted... Typically, Gary Price would be out here plucking pungent produce from the ground... But this year he planted potatoes instead. Gary Price/ Garlic farmer-"It's a fun plant when it grows!"... That's because when Price was looking for signs of the odiferous tuber this spring, he came up empty handed. Garlic is planted in the fall and harvested in late summer... giving it a long time to mature. But Price says little or no moisture in the fall, put a damper on his crop. Gary-"As you can see we don't have an irrigation system and again, a fantastic weed system...but I took, I have a thousand-gallon tank and I took last fall I was trying desperately to get water on it. And I took the thousand gallon tank and I would drive down the rows and I was just dumping water on the ground, but I didn't get enough. It was just terribly dry..." Price admits it really stinks... but he's trying to make the best of things. Especially since the second annual "Garlic and Grape Festival" is fast approaching. Gary-"You get things all crankin' and you get a demand for the product and then to turn around and say sell geez, I don't have any." Gary's not letting the situation get him down... he says next month, he'll be out here again... Gary- "Keep trying."... planting his favorite fragrant food flavoring and praying for rain. Debbie Kuehn KX News. The Garlic and Grape Festival is set for September 20th at the Minot Auditorium.
