Associated Press Washington (AP) America's third-highest ranking diplomat will join in a meeting with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator and colleagues from other world powers. A senior U.S. official says William Burns will not negotiate during Saturday's meeting in Switzerland, which is aimed at persuading Iran to halt activities that could lead to the development of nuclear weapons. WASHINGTON (AP) The Fed chairman will spend a second day on Capitol Hill Wednesday, testifying before a House committee. Ben Bernanke told senators Tuesday the central bank is facing "significant challenges" as it tries to figure out how to stabilize a shaken economy. The Fed can't afford to lower rates again because it would aggravate inflation. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Fire crews in California are trying to cut off the Los Padres National Forest wildfire with a controlled burn. Authorities evacuated 20 homes in anticipation of the burn, which is meant to clear away flammable brush between homes and the blaze. The fire is 61-percent contained. WESTLEY, Calif. (AP) California authorities fear seven people are dead after a truck slammed into an SUV and both vehicles tumbled into an irrigation canal. One body has been recovered.
