Sen. Dorgan In Rugby Discussing Farm BillJun 22 2008 11:14PM
KXMCTV Minot The U.S. Senator held a farm meeting today to discuss the price of fuel and fertilizer and other Agricultural issues with local producers. Dorgan said at the meeting that the new Farm Bill will give a boost to North Dakota farmers and ranchers by strengthening the farm safety net, implementing country-of-origin labeling, and restoring a permanent disaster aid program. The senator told the farmers that it's that disaster language in the bill that really sets this farm bill apart from others. (Sen. Byron Dorgan, -D- ND) "We've had to go scraping, trying to get the president to agree and he hasn't agreed by and large, so we put a disaster title in the farm bill. When we run into trouble, it'll trigger a disaster proposal that'll help family farmers through tough times. It's a good bill. Everyone was frustrated including me about how long it took but it's done and it's good for North Dakota and the country." Dorgan also told the farmers he has requested an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission into the dramatic rise of fertilizer prices. He says the price increase cannot be explained simply by the rise in fuel prices.
