Leola bans certain dog breeds

Eds: APNewsNow.

LEOLA, S.D. (AP) Leola voters have approved the city council's decision making it illegal to possess pit bulls, bull mastiffs, Rottweilers, Doberman pinchers and German shepherds.

The vote this past week was 103-27 to endorse the council's action.

Not only is it illegal to possess the breeds. It's also illegal to have crossbreeds of them.

The new city ordinance also limits to two the number of any breed of dogs anyone can possess.

It has an exception for people who raise and sell dogs. Also, the banned breeds are allowed if they help or are being trained to help people with disabilities.

Mayor Dean Schock says the ordinance was passed due to concerns from people who walk and bike or whose children bike around town.

Posted by Mad Dog Owner on May 26 2008 4:06PM - What is this Nazi Germany for dogs? Should we all only own Golden Retrievers and maybe we should all have blond hair and blue eyes? You really shouldn't buy into all this mass media hysteria about dogs! You are much more likely to get struck by lighting! (that is a fact)...so don't spend too much time conjuring up these horrendous scenarios that you'll be eaten by a dog! Please don't judge the breed, try looking at the other end of the lead! (or lack thereof!).

Posted by sdr1968 on May 27 2008 10:49AM - I Thought America Was A Free Country Well With Things Like This Happening It's Not Free Anymore. It Needs To Be Laws About Bad Owners The Dogs Are Not The Stupid Ones. When Something Happens It Is Always Said It Is One Of These Types Of Dogs But Any Dog Will Bite If They Are Provoked Or No Proper Supervision Is Given. Do Not Take It Out On Innocent Dogs And Dog Owners For The Stupidity Of Humans.

Posted by freegirl1 on May 27 2008 2:59PM - Don't blame the breed, with proper training~ all of these are great companions. Because of lack of training and obedience from HUMANS these guys get a bad name. There are bad dogs in all breeds. I have had personal experience with a pitbull cross and he is the sweetest, best mannered dog. Better manners than my own two!! Some people are just afraid of any dog over 20lbs no matter who they are, so I guess their way to fix fear is to make it non existant.

Posted by mercari_dobermans on May 27 2008 9:25PM - You need to enforce leash laws and enact stiff monetary penalties to those who do not comply. It is not specific breeds of dogs that are the problem, it is the OWNERS. People who don't take the time to train, socialize, and care for their dogs. You do not have a DOG problem, you have a PEOPLE problem.
Ya know, statistically a child's biggest threat is another human being. Humans injure/abuse/kill other humans more than any breed of dog. Another interesting stat is that more children are sent to the ER with serious sports injuries than they are dog bites. Maybe they should ban sports?

Posted by tanglewynde on May 28 2008 5:13PM - Do you see how contradictary this bill is??? Ban Dobes and German Shepards EXCEPT those who are being trained as ASSISTANCE dogs. SO, if logic follows, protect the public from these dogs that help the blind, deaf, children with disabilities???
SO, out of fear that one of the banned breeds will attack the public, we use those same breeds to HELP those in the public the who need help the most!!
What illogical politician thought this one up?? OH, I forgot, it was a politician and that answers all my questions. I would suggest that the dogs are the smart ones in this matter.

Posted by woodman on Jun 5 2008 1:26PM - I agree wiyh all the comments so far. The dog is not the problem, it is the owners. We can put a dog to sleep but we can't do anthing to a person who trains a dog to kill, fight, or attack other living things without hurting the owners feelings or civil rights. I hope that I do not have to wait until a dog to attack me before the owner is held responsible. Oh thats right, people aren't held responsible for their actions, blame the dog.

Posted by jammerg on Oct 6 2008 9:39AM - Nazi Germany is right. WOW when will people get a clue, it's not the totally the dogs fault. You have to teach them in order for them to respond and act. Ins. companies have a top ten list of dogs that bite and last time I knew Bullmastiffs weren't on it.
What about the dogs that are already part of a family that are good citizians, do those families have to get rid of their beloved family members? If that's so them maybe you should ask the same of people that have children that are bad and cause trouble. ask them to send their children away or ban them for unwanted behavior too.
People need to get their heads out of the sand box and get better educated on some of these breeds and look at the owners if they abused, tortured the animal or signed them up for obidence classes....it's not the dogs fault if they don't know how to act correctly look at the human and ban them.....oh I'm sorry they pay taxes. $$$$
