Probe into High Fertilizer PricesMay 16 2008 7:10PM
KXMBTV Bismarck In the past 30 days the price of anhydrous ammonia has increased by 240-dollars a ton. And now North Dakota Farmers Union wants a federal investigation of why farmers are paying so much. The organization is requesting that a committee of Congress and/or Federal Agency look into the reasons for the rapid price increase. (Robert Carlson / NDFU President) "We are alarmed. I have heard more from farmers on this issue than I have heard from farmers in the last couple of years. A lot of unhappiness and some down right anger over the high price of fertilizer and then the short supply of it as well. Local dealers aren't to blame. They are just doing a little margin to pay for their devliery and storage costs and all that. They are as angry about it as the farmers." Carlson says there is a strong beilef that price gouging and price fixing are occuring somewhere below the retail level.
