Kenmare City Council votes to ban some dog breedsApr 25 2008 10:37AM
Associated Press The Kenmare City Council voted April 14th to ban American Staffordshire terriers, Rottweilers and Doberman pinschers in the town of about 1,000. People who have those breeds have 10 days to remove them. Mayor Roger Ness says the ordinance affects only a few dogs in Kenmare, but opponents have been vocal and he expects them to be at the next council meeting in May. Ness says no one has been bitten by a vicious dog, but he wants to make sure that does not change. He says residents feel threatened by dogs that have come into the city in the last couple of months. Kenmare had banned pit bulls earlier. Ness said people were licensing dogs under other breed names the city felt were very similar to pit bulls. The new ordinance adds American Staffordshire terriers, Rottweilers, Doberman pinschers and any mixture of those breeds. Violators could be fined at least $100. The city council wants to prevent bites, so maybe the city council should ban all dogs, because all dogs can pose a threat to people.
My son was bit by an unprovoked Shetland Sheepdog that left its yard. The dog unleashed and not in the control of the owner.
I say the city council should educate themselves and the community on how to behave around dogs and what to do to prevent dog bites. Other ordinances would make more sense, like not allowing a dog off leash, the dog should always be in the control of the owner. If someone is bitten by a dog, any dog then deal with that dog and that dogs owner.
To ban a dog because of the breed is ridiculous. I have met many American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers that were better behaved than some Labrador Retrievers.
