Defense chief says Fallon's leaving is not precursor to war

PENTAGON (AP) Admiral William Fallon's resignation as U.S.

military commander in the Middle East follows an article in Esquire magazine describing him as a lone voice against taking military action against Iran over its nuclear program.

But Defense Secretary Robert Gates says it would be "ridiculous" to suggest that Fallon's resignation signals that the United States is planning to go to war with Iran.

Gates also says he sees "no differences at all" between Fallon's and the administration's approach to Iran.

Still, in a statement released by Central Command, Fallon said the reports "have become a distraction at a critical time," making it "difficult" for him to do his job.

Gates says Fallon's job will be filled by his top deputy, Army Lieutenant General Martin Dempsey, until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed by the Senate.

President Bush has issued a statement saying Fallon has served "with great distinction."
