Research Ongoing Into Preemie Vaccine

In this country, 12 to 13 percent of all pregnancies come to an unexpected conclusion too early resulting in a baby who must battle through the complications of prematurity.

What if there was something as simple as a vaccine for an expectant mother that could bring that rate of prematurity down? That may be the case in a few years.

The March of Dimes is currently researching a vaccine for women that could eliminate some early births.

Dr. Thomas Carver is a neonatologist at Trinity Health in Minot he explains what exactly this breakthrough would do.

(Dr. Thomas Carver - Trinity Health) "There are researchers looking at a vaccine for prematurity. So now they are starting to work on those issues because a lot of women who go on to develop pre-term labor have an inflammatory process going on in their body and so there is a hope that some of these vaccines can prevent some of that."

While Dr. Carver is excited about what a vaccine could do he stresses there is something that can be done already that would bring the rate of premature birth down proper pre-natal care something he says not enough women get today. watch the video | save this article / add to your favorites list
