Mistake Sends Nukes on B-52Sep 5 2007 1:02PM
KXMCTV Minot Officials at Minot Air Force Base tell the Air Force Times online newspaper that members of the ground crew responsible for mistakenly loading the nuclear weapons onto the B-52 bomber's wings have been temporarily decertified from doing their duties involving weapons. In addition, Pentagon officials who spoke on condition of anonymity say the munitions commander involved in the incident has been fired. According to the Air Force Times, the B-52 flew from Minot Air Force Base to the only other B-52 base in the nation, Barksdale Air Force Base, on August 30th. The newspaper says the bomber was mistakenly loaded with six Advanced Cruise Missiles. An Air Force official says there was no danger to the public. The main problem, according to a former Defense Department official, was that the Air Force was not aware of the nuclear missiles on the flight and would not have handled it with the proper safeguards in case of an emergency. He said there was no danger of a nuclear detonation, even in the event of a crash. The Air Combat Command has ordered a command-wide stand down on Sept. 14th to review procedures.

As for flying with Nukes, so what. Back in the yesteryear we flew with Nukes all the time. Each Strategic Air Command Base worked under Operation Chrome Dome where each base provided a fully armed B-52 for National defense 24/7. F-106's were also armed. And yes they had a Nuke also.
I was an Air Force member for 27 years and I don't ever remember ever seeing any Mushroom Clouds........ anywhere.
I much prefered Loading Nuclear Weapons to some of the Conventional munitions I up-loaded. They are much safer. Try MK-82's with Anti-Withdrawl Fuzes or Napalm and Willy Pete, or 2.75 Rockets loaded while the Aircraft was still hot for a Quick Turnaround. OOOOOOps was not a word you strived to hear during a loading operation.

So what?!?!? We just broke provisions within SALT and START, and could have gone very close to the [remote] possibility of nuclear war. The Russian may have been justified. I don't think a "so what" serves your argument very well.
We will all see if this is part of a grander plan on September 14th when the *entire* Air Force is grounded, leaving the room for another attack.
