Evidence in trash admissible in meth trial

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) The South Dakota Supreme Court says trash stashed for collection at the curb was fair game for a curious cop who was investigating a drug-related disappearance in Rapid City.

The ruling means that evidence first gathered in the garbage and later from Wayne R. Stevens' home may be used against him on drug charges.

Police say they found drugs in the home after learning that Stevens had an argument over a debt with Troy Klug (KLOOG) who disappeared three years ago.

Three people have since been found guilty in connection with Klug's disappearance.

Stevens has denied any involvement.

Today's high court ruling paves the way for Stevens' trial on charges of methamphetamine possession.
