Taliban fire rockets at gathering attended by President Karzai, nobody inju...Jun 10 2007 10:21AM
Associated Press KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) Suspected Taliban militants attempted to kill Afghan president Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye) in a rocket attack. Authorities say the militants fired off rockets near a school yard where the president was speaking to local leaders and residents. Officials say no one was hurt. A local reporter says Karzai (KAHR'-zeye) called on everyone to keep their calm and continued with his speech. A Taliban spokesman claims the group watched for an hour after the attack as ambulances and helicopters patrolled the area. The attack happened as clashes and airstrikes in Afghanistan's south and northwest left 47 suspected militants and two police officers dead. % |
